Fun Read "Pig" Model of Executive Compensation [M. Schwartz, Harvard Social Relations 10 Class Notes 1966]

Check Michael Schwartz’s class notes for an analysis ostensibly from the cited course of the pig (versus hero) model of executive compensation and how it relates to social networks of influence and authority, page 57 of 83. Pay may not be about worth necessarily. Under this assumption pay may be an important tool used to delineate who is who in private companies.

http://www.isnae.org/papers/Soc%20Rel%2010%20Spr%201967%20M%20Schwartz%20notes.pdf

We don’t use designations such as earl or baron to determine salary, page 19. Salary has become a designation itself that determines salary and the caste system. This may or may not be true. It is entertaining to consider.

Monthly Harvard SF Conference Call

Anyone want to help me sponsor a monthly SF Bay Area grad conference call? I'm getting a lot of alums wanting to contact me to get to others. What needs to happen is we create a regular vehicle (The Call) where we talk with each other, share and build a mix of relationships. The agenda for The Call will be emailed in advance and the subject matter can vary based upon interest. No matter is too small or too lofty would be my guideline.

If the Harvard Club of SF wants to take this idea and run with it I am fine about that too.

U.S. Senator Barack Obama's Secret Service Detail [Magna Cum Laude Harvard Law School]

Please consider helping me deliver a message to the White House that as a point of honor, Senator Obama’s Secret Service detail should scale and increase in quality as is necessary to protect him. I have no crystal ball, but I can imagine that he is receiving an increased number of threats already now that he is considering a run for the White House (as an identifiably black person). I don’t know whether he will formally run for President or not; if he does, the White House needs to deliver the message to him that he will be assigned the resources and quality needed to protect him and his family as he goes through this process.

As many of you may know he “was born in Hawaii in 1961 to an American mother and a Kenyan father. When he was two, his parents, who had met as students at the University of Hawaii, divorced. Obama's Harvard-educated father then returned to Kenya, where he worked in the economics ministry. Obama lived in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather for part of his childhood, returning to Hawaii to finish high school. He graduated from Columbia University, where he majored in political science and specialized in international relations. He then attended Harvard Law School, graduated magna cum laude, and served as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.”

Harvard to stop early admissions

Harvard to stop early admissions

JUSTIN POPE

Associated Press

BOSTON - Harvard University will eliminate its early admissions program because it puts poor and minority students at a disadvantage, school officials planned to announce Tuesday.

Under the surprise move, the Ivy League school will discontinue its "early action" round of admissions, in which high school seniors can apply by Nov. 1 and receive a decision - accept, reject or defer - by Dec. 15.

The change will take effect for students applying to enter Harvard in the fall of 2008. All applications for that class will be due Jan. 1.

"The college admissions process has become too pressured, too complex, and too vulnerable to public cynicism," said Harvard interim President Derek Bok in a statement issued by the university. "We hope that doing away with early admission will improve the process and make it simpler and fairer."

Under early action, applicants must agree not to apply to other schools early but can apply elsewhere in the spring. More commonly, colleges allow students to apply early decision, which requires them to commit to attending if accepted.

Both programs have been criticized as favoring wealthier, well-connected applicants who don't need to worry about balancing competing offers of financial aid. Harvard, along with other elite schools, has faced criticism for a high concentration of wealthy students despite significant efforts to expand financial aid in recent years.

At most selective colleges, applicants are accepted from the early pool at a higher rate than from the general pool, though the colleges contend that is at least in part because the applicant pool is stronger.

"Early admission programs tend to advantage the advantaged," Bok said. "Students from more sophisticated backgrounds and affluent high schools often apply early to increase their chances of admission, while minority students and students from rural areas, other countries, and high schools with fewer resources miss out."

Also, he said, students "who apply early and gain admission to the college of their choice have less reason to work hard at their studies during their final year of high school."

[London] Looking for unwanted digital cameras to support a community photography course

Hello Everyone,

I am a volunteer at a not-for-profit photography school called Zoom-
in (www.zoom-in.org) in South London. Throughout the year they
organise numerous community education projects. In September they are starting a free photography course for young people to provide them with an opportunity to equip themselves with transferable skills such as technical and creative photography skills, computer skills, Photoshop and web design skills. The course is designed to run over 6 months, with 6 modules of 4 weeks duration each. They have been fortunate to receive MTV's direct support so far for the final two modules, which will be based at MTV's offices and working with computers.

In order to support the earlier modules, they are looking for
digital cameras that the young people can use. Thus, I would be
very interested to know whether anyone had an unwanted digital
camera that they would be willing to donate? We are looking for 6-10
digital cameras in total.

Please feel free to contact me (ggniewosz@mba2002.hbs.edu; +44-797 687 6091) if you would like further information or would like to
donate a digital camera.

Many thanks in advance!

[Women For Women International] Two Bands Makeout Room Monday July 24th

On Monday, July 24th, there is a live music show to start your week out the right way. The night will feature two excellent local bands - The Julia Lau Band and The Valerie Orth Band... (check out their bios below). And, the proceeds from the door will benefit Women For Women International - an excellent organization that supports women survivors of war. So, come mix it up with new people and great new local music. Monday, 7/24, 7:30-9:30pm MAKEOUT ROOM 3225 22nd Street, San Francisco's Mission District $6 (proceeds to benefit Women For Women International)

JULIA LAU: Julia Lau is a singer songwriter and recording artist in the SF Bay Area. Her AAA/alt/rock music has been described as revealing, honest, compelling and evocative and has been compared to that of Jewel and Sarah McLachlan. Julia Park of The Music Scene comments, "Smart, compassionate, heartfelt, soulful and sincere... like Sarah McLachlan, Lisa Loeb and others of their ilk." And, Gina Morris of Evolution Of Media states, "It's a quietly stirring beauty of a first CD. Lau has a haunting voice that's similar to Dido's, but with more grit." Lau interweaves lush acoustic landscapes with stories of longing, loss and redemption. Before pursuing music fulltime, Julia worked for several years as a community organizer in San Francisco's Chinatown. The themes in her music reflect those roots as well as her strong ties to her culture and community. Julia released her debut full-length album "In The Wildflowers And Weeds" in February 2006 and performs regularly with her band throughout the region. For more information go to www.julialau.net .

VALERIE ORTH: Sure Valerie Orth (aka Vlo) can write a lovely song, but that's not all she does. Her sultry voice has an edge and her lyrics tell tales of violent, broken worlds and those who struggle to piece them back together. Her rhythms stop just when you're comfortable and pull you back just when you thought you'd been dropped. Her melodies and phrases will catch in your head and stay there humming to you for days, and if you listen beyond their beauty, you'll come away scarred and stronger.

harvardsf.org Donations Drive For SF, LA, China, Europe & The Harvard Technology Forum

I founded and started connecting Harvard grads all ages, all programs, these networks in October of 2004. It has been one heck of a ride. I won't give you a song and dance that I need help else the network might falter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The experience has been revitalizing and oodles of fun. It has been a privilege to get to know many of you. Hopefully you have found the experience useful.

That said, we are at a pivot point. (1) I have a vision of on-line tools that could be developed to deepen and better allow us to collaborate peer-to-peer. I need to put my engineering management skills to the test. The work will be done by grads (and their firms) around the world. I can't ask them to do it for free. And (2) I could use admin help occasionally; instead of winging it alone (as I have done so far) as this association between us grows to over 2000 verified alums worldwide.

harvardsf.org is on its own and not connected to the University "club" system. To grow I want us to depend on donations. To make a one time contribution on-line in any of 14 currencies go to the donations page http://harvardsf.com . Consider it.

RE[One More Request]: [harvard-sf] Volunteers For Sept. 5th '06 Oakland Elementary School Talk

And please don't take this the wrong way. Last time I noticed the 2 class rooms had a number of black girls. As I talked and another black male grad spoke (who grew up w/o money in Oakland) I noticed some of the boys light up, ask questions and really feel a connection. I wish the world and human nature didn't work this way. I had the distinct impression that if we had additionally 2 black or minority women grads with us, those girls would have felt that the Harvard world included them, which it does.

I don't have any (or much) idea who on this list is which race or ethnicity. That is a good thing but forces me to say stuff like this from time to time. Additionally we did not have white guys or Asians with us and that did not feel right either. It was an extremely diverse set of faces sitting in that room in front of me (10-11 yr. olds) and we have a matching set of faces on this list. I need one of each of you to step forward please.

If you are looking for something you can do to make a difference, imagine this. We went and spent two hours out of our time to talk to this class. The teachers tell me to this day they see a noticeable improvement in the homework and test scores years later. I have letters from the kids, they wrote thank you notes. Is that worth your time?

Perry

P.S. And folks from any Harvard grad school program we need you too.

Top 10 Technology Questions

Help me out here. If we wanted to define the "Top 10 Technology Questions" & challenges, what would they be? Delete, change, correct and adjust the following and send your take to the Harvard Technology Forum list as a member; sign up at http://harvtechforum.org . Or send your comments to me pg@harvtechforum.org and I'll post what you say verbatim. What are the problems where technology plays an important role?

1. Are there 11 dimensions, or X many more than we have established by experiment today, and what is the interaction with the world we perceive of those dimensions?
2. Are the current tools in play on Earth destroying it and making it unlivable and what are we going to do about it?
3. If we can redefine the building blocks of life what world will we build and what methodology will govern our choices?
4. With more and more data accessible can we make it useful?
5. Is there life elsewhere in other dimensions or in the Universe we perceive and can science establish that this is so?
6. What is going to be done about weapons development and use?
7. What is going to be done about human suffering and disparity between population centers in this regard?
8. When will we leave this planet and populate elsewhere; where, and how will we go?
9. What is life? I almost made this one 5(a).
10. Can technology help us resolve disputes better?

How will the necessary components to go after these questions be funded? I made these up. Many of you are experts in the areas where I am treading so please do not hesitate to comment and redefine what I am saying. And my question for the group is if we were to agree on a top 10 list (and that is a big if) what are we going to do to help in these areas, why or why not? And if we had to put the list in priority order what order would that be, and why?

[From David Evans] Taunting of Black Soccer Players

From: David L. Evans [Harvard FAS]

Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 5:04 PM

To: Gregg, Perry

Subject: Taunting of Black Soccer Players

Dear Perry,

With increasing frequency I have read about the racist taunting of African and African-descended soccer players at games in Europe. This is often (but not always) the work of traveling bands of thugs and it sometimes includes physical assault. Even more, it is done with relative impunity.

After reading a detailed article last Sunday about the upcoming World Cup competition in Germany and how black soccer players had been harassed in that country, I was fed up.

Maybe it is time for the greater world to hold the hosting countries responsible for this barbarity as we did Southern segregationists and South Africa for its apartheid policy. I expressed this view in a letter that is published in the Sports Section of today's New York Times (see below).

Best regards,

David

Letters to the Editor

Accountable to the World

To the Sports Editor:

Re "Surge in Racist Mood Raises Concerns on Eve of World Cup" (June 4): When Jim Crow laws existed in parts of this country and black citizens were set upon by racist hooligans, pickets often greeted officials from those regions when they traveled.

Moreover, companies doing business in those areas and their products were boycotted. Those tactics were effective, as were similar actions taken against South Africa during the era of apartheid.

Perhaps countries that are unable to quell egregious racist violence and major sponsors of events where patterns of violence persist should be reminded that they, too, are accountable to the world.

"Harvard expands financial aid for low- and middle-income families"

'There is no more important mission for Harvard and higher education
than promoting equality of opportunity for all,' said Harvard President
Lawrence H. Summers. (Staff file photo Justin Ide/Harvard News Office)

Reinforcing its commitment to opportunity and excellence across the
economic spectrum, Harvard today (March 30 [2006]) announced a
significant expansion of its 2004 financial aid initiative for low- and
middle-income families. Beginning with the class admitted this week,
parents in families with incomes of less than $60,000 will no longer be
expected to contribute to the cost of their children attending Harvard.
In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions of families with
incomes between $60,000 and $80,000.

The new income thresholds build on the program announced two years ago,
which provided that families with incomes below $40,000 would not be
expected to contribute to the cost of education, with a reduced
contribution for families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000. (See
2004 release) The number of students enrolled at Harvard from these
income brackets increased by 24 percent for the class entering this past
fall - the first full year of the program.

"There is no more important mission for Harvard and higher education
than promoting equality of opportunity for all," said President Lawrence
H. Summers. "We are fortunate to have significant resources, and there
is no better way to use them than to support families seeking to provide
the best possible opportunities for their children. These increases in
financial aid build on and extend our emphasis on recruiting students
from low-income backgrounds, and send a clear signal to middle-class
families who have all too often felt that Harvard and other leading
universities are out of reach."

Harvard is also revising its policy on outside awards won by incoming
students, ranging from scholarships provided by local community groups
to programs such as the National Merit and Gates Millennium
Scholarships. Students will now be able to apply these awards to
eliminate their summer savings obligations. Previously, outside awards
could be used to offset the $3,650 self-help expectation toward the cost
of attendance, but did not apply to the summer savings obligation of
$2,150.

Overall financial aid
"We are very pleased to offer such exceptional financial support to our
undergraduates," said William C. Kirby, dean of the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences, which oversees Harvard College. "Even before these
enhancements, the financial aid budget for next year was projected at
$90 million, a 6.2 percent increase over last year, and a 65 percent
increase over the past six years. This new initiative will add an
additional $2.4 million annually. Although many students and families
might find this hard to believe, Harvard is actually more affordable for
many students than public colleges or universities."

Two-thirds of Harvard students receive financial aid, and the average
grant award for next year is expected to be more than $33,000, or 70
percent of the total cost of attendance. In the past decade, Harvard has
reduced the median four-year debt for graduating seniors from more than
$16,000 to $6,400 - less than one-third of the national average of
$20,000.

Expanding the reach of the 2004 financial aid initiative
"Since its inception two years ago, the financial aid initiative aimed
at families with incomes below $40,000 has had an enormous impact in
attracting students of all backgrounds to Harvard's applicant pool,"
said William R. Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid. "The
message that Harvard is open to all talented students continues to
resonate and the momentum the program has created has encouraged
students to consider colleges they had never imagined before."

Raising the income thresholds for the financial aid initiative to a
level above the median family income in the United States is meant to
address the very real dilemmas felt by families struggling to balance
rising living expenses and the cost of higher education.

"Our financial aid initiative has been very successful in attracting
students from the lower income ranges, and we see it as an important
step in attracting more students from middle-income families, where our
application rates are lower than they should be," said Summers. "If
there are thousands of highly qualified students not applying to
Harvard, we need to find ways to address that problem. Middle-income
relief is one of the steps we are taking, but we also want to reach out
to these students in other ways."

In its ongoing effort to attract the best students, Harvard continues to
seek talented students across the nation with intensive recruiting by
the Office of Admissions, faculty, alumni, and a team of undergraduates.

"Students who have benefited from the financial aid initiative are
anxious to give back to the program by working with students who come
from similar backgrounds," Fitzsimmons said. "We hope that as we
increase the number of students who benefit from the program, we will
inspire students from every economic background to consider the full
range of our nation's colleges and universities."

Harvard Political Review Article: European Union's Bureaucracy

Europe's Democratic Deficit

How the European Union's bureaucracy snuffs out
democracy

Piotr Brzezinski

4/28/06

On Feb. 20, Spain became the first member of the
European Union to ratify the European Constitution by
national referendum. Although to the European Union
may seem unified and cohesive to outsiders, it is
actually a complex and troubled bureaucracy.

The E.U.'s internal structure is so convoluted that
few Europeans actually understand it. Most decisions
are made without any direct input from European
citizens, leading to a substantial disconnect between
the people of Europe and their government. As Harvard
professor Kathrina Zippel, an E.U. specialist, told
the HPR, "the main issue is legitimacy and
accountability...a problem of a perceived lack of
democracy and transparency in the decision making
process in the E.U."

The proposed European Constitution has some measures
to bridge this democratic shortfall. It further
empowers the European Parliament-the one body which
directly represents the European people-by extending
its legislative mandate to justice, agriculture, and
budgetary matters, all from which it used to be
excluded. But most E.U. institutions are still only
indirectly democratic; European citizens can influence
the other branches of the E.U., like the more powerful
European Council, only through their national
governments.

Even the European Parliament has lacked much
democratic legitimacy. Turnout for parliamentary
elections has fallen in every election since the first
in 1979. According to Eurobarometer surveys, over 50
percent of citizens believe that the Parliament does
not deal with citizens' concerns, and over 50 percent
said that they lack information on the elections. Only
35 percent consider themselves well-represented by the
European Parliament.

Suggestions for improvement range from promoting civic
awareness about E.U. governance to increasing
bureaucratic transparency. European leaders have
acknowledged that the perceived democratic deficit is
a serious problem for the union, but it remains to be
seen if the new Constitution will usher in a new era
of democratic engagement and E.U. legitimacy.
