NYAS China Conference reveals latest advances in biomedical sciences

Shanghai conference featured over 100 noted scientists from US, Europe and Asia China has experienced tremendous growth within the past decade. Its economic boom and growing domestic market is now paralleled by its ascendancy in the life sciences, and the country's scientists are rapidly rising to the cutting edge in areas such as neuroscience, chemical biology, and many other fields. Moreover, the global threat posed by infectious diseases such as the H5N1 bird flu virus, SARS and HIV-AIDS has spurred extensive research in China that promises to benefit science and medicine the world over.
To share the advances that Chinese scientists have made in the sciences and facilitate increased collaboration and partnership among scientists from the U.S., China, Europe, and other parts of Asia, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Institutes of Biomedical Sciences recently hosted a groundbreaking conference. This unique meeting brought together more than 100 scientists from China, the U.S., Europe and other parts of Asia to discuss the most pressing issues at the cutting edge of biomedical science.
For a comprehensive online report revealing all the major information presented at this unprecedented conference, check out www.nyas.org/china for the Frontiers in Biomedical Science eBriefing. The report includes an overview; bulleted highlights and summaries encapsulating every major presentation; chapterized, searchable audio presentations, synchronized with speakers' slides; links to relevant web sites, books, journal articles; and cross-referenced articles from the Academy on related subjects.
Exciting New Research from East and West Panel discussions, plenary lectures, and shorter technical talks by leading researchers from China, the United States, and Europe focused on four specific scientific areas: (1) chemical biology (2) infectious diseases (3) genomic medicine, and (4) neuroscience.
The eBriefing reveals the latest research on:
Chemical Biology:
Gregory Verdine, Harvard College professor of chemical biology, discussed emerging opportunities in chemical biology, and urged Chinese scientists to develop drugs from natural products for previously "undruggable" targets. He was joined by Virginia Cornish, Columbia University, who discussed research focused on developing ways of co-opting ribosomes to synthesize strings of nucleotides that do not occur in nature. Dawei Ma, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and Hua-Liang Jiang, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, discussed how methods in chemical biology might be applied to targeting the SARS virus and other microbes.
Genomic Medicine (Leukemia):
Zhu Chen, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discussed the potential benefits of genomic medicine, esp. in relation to leukemia and revealed a new method of attacking this disease. Rather than attempting to kill the cells that constitute the disease, his work attempts to reveal the complex systems of regulatory genetics that cause it. He showed data suggesting that this systems-based method can improve outcomes. In addition, Jan Carlstedt-Duke, the Karolinkska Insitute, also described several efforts in Sweden to develop comprehensive, searchable, integrated databases of genetic information.
Infectious Diseases (SARS & Avian Flu):
David Perlin, president and scientific director of the Public Health Research Institute in Newark, New Jersey, discussed the challenges of controlling infectious diseases around the world and his work on the evolution of drug-resistant strains of infectious fungi. Marc Lipsitch, Harvard School of Public Health, examined why avian flu is more dangerous than SARS, and Bing Sun, SIBS Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology discussed a diagnostic test for SARS.
Cutting-Edge Studies of Molecular Sensory Systems:
Xu Zhang, Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of Neuroscience, discussed the molecular and cellular mechanisms of pain. Bruce Hahn, University of Chicago and Sun Yat-sen University, joined him in a discussion that wove together anthropology, genetics, and neurobiology.

Aging and Hormones:
Étienne-Émile Baulieu, the past president of the French Academy of Sciences also known for his work on RU486 ("the morning-after pill") discussed how hormone therapy might be used to mitigate some diseases common to aging men and women.

The meeting was made possible with funding from: Pfizer, Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Affymetrix, Wyeth, Lundbeck, AstraZeneca, Nature Publishing Group, PriceWaterhouseCoopers The Karolinska Institute, Bridge Pharmaceuticals and CMEA Ventures.

Laurie Thomas HBS Grad Restaurant Owner SF

[See http://www.rosepistolasf.com for details. Perry]

http://www.rosepistolasf.com/about_us_management.shtml

"As an owner of two successful restaurants and an avid
equestrian, Laurie Thomas is constantly jumping over
hurdles and finding rewards on the other side. Thomas
was the lead investor in both of the restaurants she
manages today: Rose Pistola & Rose’s Café. In 1996,
she financed and helped to open Rose Pistola, which
subsequently won the prestigious James Beard award for
the Best New Restaurant in America. A year later, she
led the financing of Rose’s Café, and in 1998 she was
an investor in The Black Cat. After a successful
career as a high tech executive, Thomas joined Nice
Ventures (the company that is the General Partner and
manages the restaurants) full time in early 2001. She
managed the business through the severe industry
downturn in the months following the tragedy of
September 11th and ensured the survival of the
restaurants.

In March 2002, Thomas replaced the celebrity-chef Reed
Hearon as President and CEO of Nice Ventures. In this
role, she led the company through a successful
reorganization, which included the closing and selling
of The Black Cat restaurant, restructuring the two
remaining restaurants, and buying out Hearon’s
ownership in Nice Ventures. After stabilizing the
business, Thomas set her sights on growth. Her
commitment to using organic and sustainable products
from local vendors earned her an invitation in 2004 to
open a Saturday booth for Rose Pistola at the
acclaimed Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. The booth
became an instant hit, and was recently recognized in
the September 2005 Bon Appetit Magazine.

Today, Nice Ventures employs 160 people, and Thomas is
gearing up to open a third restaurant: Terzo (“third”
in Italian). Slated to open in December 2005, Terzo
will draw on influences from Spain, Italy, Portugal,
and Morocco to create a pan-Mediterranean experience.
To ensure the food’s authenticity, Thomas recently
spent time with her chef, project manager, and
architect visiting these countries, sampling the food,
and walking the open-air farmers markets.

When she is not growing her restaurants, Thomas is
committed to giving bac to the San Francisco
community. She is an active board member of Meals on
Wheels, a non-profit focused on feeding and providing
services for San Francisco's home bound seniors.
Additionally, she oversees her restaurants' charity
programs, which give generously year year to local and
national non-profits. Earlier in her professional
life, Thomas held senior management positions in
Silicon Valley at several enterprise software
companies. She earned a BS in Industrial Engineering
from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard
Business School. Thomas enjoys show-jumping horses
competitively, skiing, travel, food, and wine."

"Waging A Living": Jan. 6 & 7th 2006 Ben Mangan, President and CEO of Earn (Harvard KSG MPP '98) Documentary Panelist

YOU’RE INVITED
to the first Bay Area screening of WAGING A LIVING,
a new documentary chronicling the lives of the working poor in America.

SPECIAL PANEL PRESENTATION

As a special feature, please join Springboard Forward, EARN, and Paul Herman of the Omidyar Network for a panel presentation on Friday evening, January 6th in San Francisco (7:30pm show on Friday in San Francisco at Opera Plaza Cinema, 601 Van Ness Ave., SF) and Saturday evening, January 7th in Berkeley (7:15pm show on Saturday in Berkeley at Landmark’s Act 1 & 2 Theatre, 2128 Center St, Berkeley) immediately following the show featuring:

Elliott Brown, Founder of Springboard Forward
Jerrry Sangoria, San Francisco security guard featured in the film
Ben Mangan, President and CEO of Earn (Harvard KSG MPP ’98)

Waging a Living – Synopsis

“An eye-opening, often heartbreaking documentary.” The New York Times

"Should be required viewing for every concerned citizen." Christian Science Monitor

“A forthright documentary breathes life into what might have been a hailstorm of grim statistics.” Los Angeles Times

The term “working poor” should be an oxymoron. If you work full time, you should not be poor, but more than 30 million Americans – one in four workers – are stuck in jobs that pay less than the federal poverty level for a family of four. WAGING A LIVING chronicles the day-to-day battles of four low-wage earners fighting to make work pay. Shot over a three-year period in the northeast and California, this observational documentary captures the dreams, frustrations, and accomplishments of a diverse group of people who struggle to live paycheck to paycheck. By presenting an unvarnished look at the barriers four low-wage earners in the United States must overcome to lift their families out of poverty, WAGING A LIVING offers a sobering view of the elusive American Dream.

For more information on WAGING A LIVING, please visit http://www.pppdocs.com/wal.html.
