Two Weeks from Now

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Dear Alumnae and Alumni,

I'm sure there is much celebration planned for the bicentennial of
Abraham Lincoln's birth in two weeks, but, after watching the news
last night, this hallowed commemoration seems even more relevant.
What could display greater bipartisan cooperation than a vigorous
celebration of Abe Lincoln's meaning to the fundamental values of our
country? It will be instructive and maybe even good for our national
will to learn again how another tall, skilled, idealistic lawyer from
Illinois led our union through a period much more perilous than the
current straitened economic times.

As I'm sure you know, on that same February 12, 2009 the NAACP will
celebrate its centennial. That, too, might help to kindle a national
bipartisan grasp of WHAT WAS, WHAT IS and WHAT CAN BE in America--if
we work together and internalize our country's ideals.

To think, when the NAACP was founded Plessy vs. Ferguson, the infamous
"separate but equal" U. S. Supreme Court decision, was thirteen years
old, the end of Reconstruction approximately thirty-three years in the
past, and the Emancipation Proclamation was forty-six years old.
Think, too, how a sixty year-old African American must have felt about
the whimsicality of black life in this country in 1909.

Best regards,

Dave Evans

"Brother remaking our planet" Van Jones '93 YLS - Monday, February 2, 2009

Van Jones '93 YLS

The Green Collar Economy

As climate chaos and soaring fuel costs batter the U.S. economy, Van Jones brings a unique perspective to the color green. A 1993 Yale Law School alumnus, Van is a tireless advocate committed to creating "green pathways out of poverty" and greatly expanding the coalition to fight global warming. So when he imagines an Earth-friendly economy, he dreams of a society that has no throw-away species or resources - and no throw-away kids or neighborhoods.

He argues that a green economy that rescues the polar bears can also rescue the U.S. economy - putting America back to work; driving down energy and food prices; giving green-collar jobs and a second chance to wayward youth; and ending forever the need for oil wars and resource wars. In his vision, the green economy can be much more than a place for affluent people to spend money. It also can be a place for more ordinary people to earn money - and for poor people to save money.

Shifting the new environmental discussion from green consumers to green workers, Van shows how the shift from an oil-dependent, pollution-based economy can create a powerful engine for economic renewal - creating jobs for millions. Warning against the dangers of "eco-elitism" and "eco-apartheid," Van calls for a "Green New Deal" to help all classes and colors enjoy the work, wealth and health benefits of the green economy.

Van Jones.  Van Jones is founding president of Green For All and a senior fellow with the Center for American Progress.  Green For All is a U.S. organization that promotes green-collar jobs and opportunities for the disadvantaged.  Its mission is to build an inclusive, green economy - strong enough to resolve the ecological crisis and lift millions of people out of poverty.

In 2008, Green for All partnered with the Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection to launch the Green For All Academy.  The Academy trains U.S. grassroots leaders to effectively advocate for an inclusive, green economy.

On September 27, 2008, Green For All worked with national partners to produce "Green Jobs Now" – the first-ever "national day of action" calling for green-collar jobs in the United States.  More than 600 communities in all 50 states participated, with more than 50,000 signing a petition that called for federal government action to spur green jobs.

Van' has received many honors.  In 2008 alone he received:

  • the Elle Magazine Green Award 2008;
  • selection as one of the George Lucas Foundation's "Daring Dozen 2008;"
  • Hunt Prime Mover Award 2008;
  • Campaign for America's Future "Paul Wellstone Award 2008;"
  • Global Green USA "Community Environmental Leadership" Award 2008;
  • designation as one of the nation's "Plenty 20" in the October/November 2008 edition of Plenty Magazine;
  • San Francisco Foundation Community Leadership Award 2008;
  • selection as a TIME Magazine 2008 Environmental Hero; and
  • designation as one of Essence Magazine's 25 most influential/inspiring African-Americans of 2008.
At the national level, Van worked successfully in 2007 with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), U.S. Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA), U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass.) to pass the Green Jobs Act of 2007.  That path-breaking, historic legislation authorized $125 million in funding to train 35,000 people a year in "green-collar jobs."

Search Fund Opportunity

Charles is a Stanford GSB '99 grad – please contact him directly if
interested in the opportunity below.

I am a 1999 graduate of the GSB. My partner, Chris Dooley, and I
recently closed a search fund, Gum Branch Capital
(www.gumbranchcapital.com). As you may know, a search fund is a
vehicle which allows one or two entrepreneurs to target and acquire a
small to medium sized company ($10-30 million in revenue). After the
acquisition, the entrepreneurs will receive a substantial ownership
stake in the company, and are expected to serve as the senior managers
of the company going forward. The initial phase of the search fund
involves a small initial investment round which funds a national
search for a target company for at least a couple of years. Gum
Branch Capital has a distinguished team of initial investors who not
only will provide advice and counsel during the search and acquisition
process, but also provide a substantial portion of the equity
component of the acquisition. The model described above has an
excellent track record of success, with mean IRRs averaging 30%+.

Chris and I are looking for a couple of part-time interns to help us
source suitable acquisition targets. Your duties will include
managing contact with a group of regional investment banks and
regional/vertical business brokers to maintain a healthy pipeline of
deals. We will also require you to help us strategize about
appropriate verticals (given the rapidly changing economic and
financing climate) and also to help refine the criteria used to filter
deals. The approximate time commitment for this role is 8 hours a
week.

In return for your commitment, we offer two things:

· For any deal which you identify which eventually leads to a
successful acquisition, we will pay you a success fee of 0.5% of the
final acquisition price. This means that if we purchase a company
for $20 million, we will pay you $100,000 immediately upon successful
completion of the acquisition.

· In exchange for four months of your time, we will broker an
introduction to select members of our investor base. This
introduction, combined with the experience you will be able to
reference based on your work with us, will give you a "leg up" in the
process of raising your own fund should you decide to pursue this
opportunity.

Please contact me at cphillips@gumbranchcapital.com if this
opportunity is of interest to you.

Welcome HBS Class of 2010 now drop out and start your company in the Bay Area

OK that was a bold statement to get your attention. Consider launching
your venture and career in Silicon Valley. Prices have dropped on real
estate in outlying areas to record lows. Salaries are depressed. The
talent pool is the highest the country has to offer. Planting your
company here makes sense.
