Harvard Talented Tenth project visits every elementary school yearly?

Would it be possible to marshal a network of grads to talk to at least
one 5th or 6th grade class in every disadvantaged public school in
America? Could we make this happen yearly, inviting other top
university alums to join us? If the alums shared their stories (1 hr.
to start) with the gifted kids of these schools that could make a
difference? A number of grads in the past three years have done this
with me at HJ Kaiser Elementary in Oakland. We talk about the
importance of doing your home work, share stories, emphasize positive
messages as if they were our children, answer questions. The teachers
tell us that 5-7 kids in these classes of approx. 20 noticeably start
doing their home work better each time we visit -- that the improved
behavior sticks for the remainder of the year. If we are going to do
something, direct dialog with the children will get us the greatest
return for the lowest cost. If 1 hour of your volunteer time could
benefit five children, would that trade be worth it to you?

What do you think? These kids will in turn take their dreams home and
infect the adults with the goal that attending top colleges and
graduate programs is within reach for their households.

Re: (Corp. or family donor last name) Harvard Bay Area facility in Albany?

This facility will have the family name (or perhaps corp. name) of a
donor? Who wants to head getting a short list of donors to approach?
There are several people with serious subject matter expertise on this
topic interested in crafting the proposal. With the ongoing real
estate market reset, next year maybe the best time to do a deal with a
developer? To pick up an existing property?

The facility will be non-profit, open to all grads. We need an
operational model, maybe offering open to all community classes, or a
part that is a museum? Ideas? Should it have a charitable or
academic or purely alumnus emphasis, if so what would you recommend?
Is there any way to do it in Albany, CA? In an area of Albany that we
need to clean up by the shoreline or where the race track is dying?

Albany School Board deserves lenitive praise ...

for voting 4-1 last week to utilize an outside consultant in the
Superintendent search process [The Journal, Contra Costa Times, pg. 1,
Shelly Meron article, 11/16/2007]. Ostensibly, the outgoing Sup.
Willie Wong will remain focused on his current duties until he
retires. This step was the second item many of us requested. (1) We
wanted them to open the selection process casting a wide net. They
did that. (2) We asked that the Board get expert assistance, i.e. not
have Willie Wong conduct the search for the next Superintendent. The
Board listened. They've done that too.

We've beat up on the Albany School Board enough don't you think? Make
sure to say thank you. They are cc-ed on this email. Commit to

As you might know, Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks, civil rights stalwart,
colleague of Martin Luther King, Jr., Baptist preacher, lawyer, judge,
and Executive Director of the NAACP from 1977 to 1992, was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom on November 5, 2007. The presidential
remarks and citation are below.

The life experiences of this conscience-bound fighter for justice
included Nazi prisoners of war being served in restaurants, etc., that
refused to serve him although he wore the uniform of the United States
Army and was guarding the Nazis! He also has lived long enough and
fought hard enough to see two African American Secretaries of the Army
in the persons of Clifford Alexander '55 and Togo West, Jr. Both of
these men were aware of the indignities historically heaped upon Black
GI's that were tolerated by the U. S. military and how the likes of
Ben Hooks fought to end that shame.

Dr. Hooks is eighty-two. Who among the millions who have benefited
from his toils will accept the baton and run toward solutions to the
thousands and thousands of Black males in the criminal justice system?
Who will bring some novel and creative thinking to reducing the
"Achievement Gap?"

Text of President Bush's introductory remarks:

Brotherhood is perhaps the greatest theme in the life and character
of Dr. Benjamin Hooks. The man has always had what his friend Dr. King
called the strength to love. As a civil rights activist, public
servant, and minister of the Gospel, Dr. Hooks has extended the hand
of fellowship throughout his years. It was not an always thing -- easy
thing to do. But it was always the right thing to do.

Benjamin Hooks grew up in a segregated South, where economic
advantages, and even common courtesies, were often denied to African
Americans. In the Army during World War II, he guarded European
prisoners of war held in the United States. When it was time to get
something to eat, whites-only restaurants would serve the prisoners,
but not Sergeant Hooks. After the war he wanted to study law, but not
a single law school in Tennessee would admit a black man. So he went
to DePaul University in Chicago, then came back home, determined to
"break down that segregation, to end those days."

He became a lawyer, and in time was also an ordained Baptist
minister. He joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and
was an early crusader in that great movement. He also rose in the
legal profession, becoming the first African American ever to serve as
a judge of the Tennessee Criminal Court. He was named to the Federal
Communications Commission by President Nixon.

The nation best remembers Benjamin Hooks as the leader of the NAACP.
For 15 years, Dr. Hooks was a calm yet forceful voice for fairness,
opportunity, and personal responsibility. He never tired or faltered
in demanding that our nation live up to its founding ideals of liberty
and equality. His testimony had special power -- for the words that he
spoke, and for the example that he set as a man of decency and
rectitude.

It's been a great journey, and he's traveled with a good and gracious
woman at his side, Frances Hooks. They're a wonderful team. They've
been married for 56 years.

Dr. Hooks once said, "You've got to believe that tomorrow somehow can
be, and will be, better than today." Because he had that belief,
because he held on to it, because he acted upon it, an old order has
passed away. And all Americans can be grateful for the good works and
the good life of Benjamin L. Hooks. (Applause.)

The Presidential Medal of Freedom citation reads:

Benjamin L. Hooks. (Applause.) As a minister, lawyer, judge, and
public servant, Benjamin Hooks has dedicated his life to equal justice
under law. A pioneer of the Civil Rights movement and a leader of the
NAACP, he fought to extend the full promise of America to all its
citizens, and he battled injustice with civility, grace, and a
generous spirit. His efforts have helped bring our nation closer to
its founding ideals. The United States honors Benjamin Hooks: champion
of equality, opportunity, and justice. (Applause.)

An Iragi named Haider Hanoon,a business man made a numbered fixed deposit for 18 calendar months, this is valued to Seventten million Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars only in my branch. Upon maturity several notice was sent to him, even during the war, three years ago (2003). Again after the war another notification was sent and still no response came from him. We later found out that Haider Hanoon and his family had been killed during the war in Gunfire that hit their home at Mukaradeeb where his personal oil well was.
After further investigation it was also discovered that Haider Hanoon did not declare any next of kin in his official papers including the paper work of his bank deposit. And he also confided in me the last time he was at my office that no one except me knew of his deposit in my bank. So, Seventeen million Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars is still lying in my bank and no one will ever come forward to claim it. What bothers me is that according to the laws of my country at the expiration five years six months the funds will revert to the ownership of the Government if nobody applies to claim the funds.
My proposal, I am prepared to place you as the next of kin in a position to instruct the BANK to release the deposit to you as the closest surviving relation. Upon receipt of the deposit, I am prepared to share the money with you in half. That is: I will simply nominate you as the next of kin and have them release the deposit to you. We share the procentange 50/50. I would have gone ahead to ask the funds be released to me, but that would have drawn a straight line in my involvement in claiming the deposit.I assure you that I could have the deposit released to you within a few days. I will simply inform the bank of the final closing of the file relating to Haider Hanoon I will then officially communicate with my Bank and instruct them to release the deposit to you. With these: all is done. I am aware of the consequences of this proposal.
I ask that if you find no interest in this project that you should discard this mail. I ask that you do not be vindictive and destructive. If my offer is of no appeal to you,delete this message and forget I ever contacted you. Do not destroy my career because you do not approve of my proposal. You may not know this but people like myself who have made tidy sums out of comparable situations run the whole private banking sector. I am not a criminal and what I do, I do not find against good conscience, this may be hard for you to understand, but the dynamics of my industry dictates that I make this move. Such opportunities only come ones way once in a lifetime. I cannot let this chance pass me by, for once I find myself in total control of my destiny. These chances wont pass me by. I ask that you do not destroy my chance, if you will not work with me let me know and let me move on with my life but do not destroy me. I am a family man and this is an opportunity to provide them with new opportunities. There is a reward for this project and it is a task well worth undertaking. I have evaluated the risks and the only risk I have here is from you refusing to work with me and alerting my bank. I am the only one who knows of this situation, good fortune has blessed you with a name that has planted you into the center of relevance in my life. Lets

I wish to inform you that should you contact me via official channels; I will deny knowing you and about this project. I repeat, I do not want you contacting me through my official phone lines nor do I want you contacting me through my official email account. Further more be informed that the fact that you are a foreigner give you the privilege to stand in as my deceased client beneficiary as my deceased client had no relation all his family died with him during the war and I can not use my relation because its not accepted here . Also I am very confident that we will be able to establish the trust that is needed to complete this deal and all that I need from the time been is your willingness and commitment so that we can end this in the nest one weeks.
What you need to understand about this transaction is that I will make sure that it passes through all international banking laws regards to retaining the service of my Attorney to give the transaction the proper documentation that is required to perfect the finishing. Cubahia dance performance and a request

Hi friends,
I'd like to invite you to a special performance exploring the
similarities of Cuban and Brazilian popular dance and music. Brasarte,
the dance center I attend, is presenting "Cubahia" (Bahia is a state
in Brazil with a strong African cultural influence). This is a
collaboration between Brazilian and Cuban dance teachers and students
in the Bay Area.
This is an especially exciting event because my dance teacher,
Conceição Damasceno, a spectacular dancer will be performing along
with Royland Lobato, a Cuban Rhumba dance teacher and performer.
Other top dancers will join them during the program concluding, in
true Carnaval spirit, in a call to all the dance students and audience
to join in.
Cubahia will be performed at Laney College Theatre. 900 Fallon St. Oakland
on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, December 2nd at Florence Gould
Theatre, Palace of the Legion of Honor, 34th Ave & Clement St., San

.. out of their basement apt. on 16th St. in the Mission. This morning to a packed house, Rosaio Navarrette, Asst. Director, 30th St. Senior Center, recounted in tears her memories as a survivor of these 3 Princeton grads (fresh out of college who drove to SF to found WOMAN, Inc.) opening their apartment at 9 PM at night to give women a place to go when they had no where else. Rosaio said she'd never forget the flowered shower curtain they put up in the room. It divided the non-profit help center from the personal living area. Today our office on Valencia St. takes approx. 25,000 calls a year from women surviving abuse. This was the best Wake Up Call fund raiser we've ever had!

Thanksgiving VIP Stuffed Animal Collection:
We will be collecting stuffed animals to donate to the Violence
Intervention Program (VIP). VIP is an award-winning program
affiliated with USC Medical which works with children who have been
sexually assaulted and/or abused. When a child comes to VIP for
his/her first medical appointment due to allegations of abuse or
neglect, he/she is encouraged to pick a new stuffed animal. The
stuffed animal quickly becomes a source of comfort and friendship to
children going through a scary and uncertain time. We will collect
the stuffed animals at the door on Tuesday for delivery to VIP.
