Dear Alumnae and Alumni,

 

When Dr. Dorothy Height died this morning, another towering oak fell in the forest.  Those of us who were shielded by the leafy branches of her humanity and anchored and emboldened by the deep roots of her courageous example in civil rights and women's rights are forever in her debt.

 

Born at a time when women could not vote and Jim Crow and lynching of African Americans was widespread in this country, she lived long enough and worked hard enough to see that same country elect an African American president.

 

Active until the very end, Dr. Dorothy Height PAID HER DUES!  In fact, she paid so many dues, she is owed a million dollars in change!

Within 4 millimeters, the US Open question has become: throughout the
tournament, was everyone who served and touched the line "too soon"
uniformly called for it?

Suggestion. Continue the use of the magnetic field in tennis to
automate the process. Require certain grade metal in the soles of
shoes and in the heads of racquets (or the strings). Combined with the
metal powder present in tennis ball rubber, a device can be created to
determine that the head of the racquet is in probable contact with the
ball before either shoe is in contact with the line. Over the line OK.
In contact with the line a no-no before the strike -- an alert sounds
giving the umpire the opportunity to make the call. The service motion
happens too fast to trust humans to make the evaluation. Machines are
better. The game improves as we take emotions out of it.

Brown doctors

Do our US doctors of the medical industrial complex stand for good? We
are about to find out.

If they do not use their influence to get us equitable care for
everyone, we should open the markets to allow Americans access to
international health plans. Versus no care, why not be treated
remotely over the web? Outsourcing will do the industry good. If US
care is so good they won't mind if we trust but verify -- utilize
competition to yield metrics. Let markets decide. Pray for choice. Ask
god for a doctor in India. With the price you are paying you can
afford it.

Doctor button

Calling all Harvard & Stanford grads. Share this direction with
Washington. For health care the referendum is on the doctors. Who did
we send to medical school? Who took all those government loans and
subsidies to get through to residency? How much have they made in
return? Where are they now that our country is in crisis? Why won't
they treat the people, all the people?

If Americans are denied a complete health care solution this year
doctors will lose the good will of the people. Being a US doctor will
be an embarrassment. There will be no hiding. Your MD will be viewed
with disdain in the rain on the golf course. Everywhere you go you are
going to start to hear feedback from the public. There will be no
where to cower from the common sense reasonable person verdict of the
untreated.

Shadow boob jobs recovery

Have a sense of humor. It appears as though the rebuild of America is
for political appearance purposes. Looks are king. Even if we have to
blow up salty balloons of water and put them in our chests for
courage, we're on the rebound damn it. Don't touch the recovery and
call it fake you dotty whiner.

On the back of the fantastic American health care system which we've
decided is best preserved by actually not taking care of people,
workers will be in jobs with facades in the continental US. Take care
of yourself. Inflate the balloons. There is room for you in the lobby
greeting clients.

I don't get it. If everyone in America wanted a lawyer my brethren
would be drooling all over the plan to do it. What the heck is wrong
with our doctors? We need their leadership. Did they go to med school
for the money truck?

Why keep it twice? - search engineering esperance your-oo

Leapfrog Google? The search industry is bent down. Imagine next week
the Yahoo to Redmond flights where heads hit the seat upright pillows
dreaming of this upheaval. You are about to receive a magic vessel
infusion. When you lift your head from this email you'll have the
power to start your own company with two 'o's in its name. What part
of Africa, the Ukraine, India, Europe, China or the US will fuel the
your-oo headquarters? You'll be lauded for your green solution. No
data center near Grand Coulee or wave energy farm was needed. Why keep
the data twice?

The energy to store the data in your search results was paid for once.
You store it on your server we can access now. Why pay to copy and
keep a reflection of what is on your server in other locations too?
And what about latency? The copies are never accurate on demand.

So. The answer? Build an open source or proprietary search project
that leaves a stub of your data indexed on your server. It is your
data not theirs. Each server advertises. Create a billing system that
pays server providers where this footprint is above a certain onerous
threshold. Your data center costs for your-oo reduce to staging areas
around the world that temporarily hold indices and common high volume
results. The Redmond-Mountain View business models are disrupted.
You're a genius. Google survives with unbridled aspirations reduced.
They own the translation layer to the data on your server. Redmond
consortium dies replaced by you. Valid revolution starts as impossible
fantasy.

URGENT: What can 4912 people at Stanford do with 4054 harvard-bay-area grads?

How can we bring these two together for good purposes on-line?
Suggestions please? The two groups are mostly on open source Mailman
with a little legacy Yahoo sprinkles from back in the day.

What web technologies would bring the crowd together? Keep in mind
there are similar size groups for UC Berkeley and UC Davis.
Integrating them into the soup is next. The lists are self funded to
pay for the engineering of whatever it is you dream up. Paint a
picture. These member numbers will be double in a year. Perhaps a
trade, a company partnership? My mind is open.

Planning for our annual dinner in the fall has begun. Consider being a
table captain. Help support the organization that runs the main crisis
line (25K+ calls per year) for Bay Area women. You can imagine in
these economic times what that means for our families?

WINC is 31 with an amazing staff. Together with our ED, Roberta
Toomer, they are our life blood. Roberta has executive skills and a
caring work ethic that are off the charts. Conna Craig, one of the
most highly respected Harvard grads in the Bay Area, is our Board
President. Would you consider being a table captain?

Be a leader. Invite your friends and family to sit with you at our
annual event. We need your time and good energy. There is no charge
for the meal. At the end of the presentation we do an "ask". Giving is
optional. The main purpose is to educate the community so women know

Four for fourth farrago

Squint. If you want to see our future this Fourth do so. Wide eyed,
open eared, too much data rushes in. Fitting you try to find our state
during the intended pomp of this day. What do you see through a narrow
aperture?

1. Confusion. Bombarded with conflicting information, how can a child
find their way in this mess? The information revolution showed up and
barfed all over us. Pay attention to the verbiage you encounter today.

2. Broken learning model. In a mind outside the country club in a
place the limo passes with windows sealed is the raw energy we need to
cultivate. Are the buildings of knowledge open to the people you see?

3. Opportunity. Positive energy. Isn't it amazing? Close your eyes. Do
you feel it? The life force in these universes is meant to be. It
wants to work together. Why?

4. Over growth. Many good plans and best of intentions showed up to
run this country. Great things happened. The plans went potty. We
lacked the conviction to clean up. Bathrooms of congressional action
from the 4th enactments till now are making us sick. Shooting ego
fireworks over it without wisdom ... stuff down a dog.

Eliminate States

What efficiencies would we gain if we halved the number of states,
cities, counties, school districts in America? Get rid of the ones
that are not creating economic opportunities for their residents.
Fewer regulations. Lower taxes. Better states take the lead. Bad
states die.

Not married to this. If it isn't working we have to start questioning
our assumptions. It is fine for the administration to be loaded with
brilliant people. Are they too smart to act? They are playing with the
knobs on a hugely complicated macro pin ball game. You know the kind?
Lights flashing, sounds whirring and magnets under the particle board
pulling your ball to the traps. When do you walk away if it doesn't
feel right? What would we gain if we redesigned? Can we win if we
don't?

Don't let the US media families pull you towards revolution in Iran
taking your focus away from the one needed here. Have we lost the
ability to call shit shit and great great? God won't bless an America
not willing to help itself. Are you on your feet or on your knees?

A New Way of Working

Recent improvements in high speed Internet connectivity; the availability of low cost enterprise software tools; seemingly never ending increases in the billable rates and overhead of conventional professional service firms; and widespread dissatisfaction with the pressures and lack of work/life balance inside these firms have led to the emergence of a new kind of business – the virtual service firm (VSF). VSFs allow professionals in law, accounting, recruiting, product design, investment and other fields the flexibility to work from home, set their own hours and rates, work in teams, live where they want to live, work less, charge much lower billable rates, be less of a burden on the environment and still earn more money than they could at conventional firms.
